CIVIL WAR ENDS!

http://www.thedailybeast.com/cheats/2015/10/26/ole-miss-removes-confederate-flag.html

Univ, of Mississippi takes down state flag from university grounds, which flag contains Confederate battle emblem, after a vote by the student senate, thus rejoining the rest of America, albeit in the 21st century rather than the 19th as reasonable people might have expected.

Better late than never.

Kudos to Ole Miss, however, 'cause some folks still think the War continues.  Thems even has a web site, a batshit crazy web site, but an online presence nonetheless.  The Deep South, according to thems, still under illegal occupation by the federal government,

Man, never thought some could sound more backwards than Mississippi or the Klan boys from Ft. Christmas, FL, but the current Confederate States of America takes my top prize for delusional paranoid fools of this and last century.  Thank the US Constitution which gives you the right to publish your views and us to mock y'all.

Idjuts!

[The University of Mississippi took down the state flag from campus on Monday morning, heeding calls from students and administrators who said the inclusion of the Confederate symbol in one portion of the flag made it unfit to fly...

“The University of Mississippi community came to the realization years ago that the Confederate battle flag did not represent many of our core values, such as civility and respect for others,” Interim Chancellor Morris Stocks said in the statement. “Since that time, we have become a stronger and better university. We join other leaders in our state who are calling for a change in the state flag.”

The student senate voted 33-15-1 to take the flag down on Oct. 20 and, six days later, the banner came down,,,,]  http://www.foxnews.com/us/2015/10/26/university-mississippi-removes-state-flag/

Don't Forget Johnny Cash

Damn, he sang the song for me, for the poor and downtrodden.

I LOVE the Grateful Dead

Way back in the last century, in the time of dinosaurs, the Rolling Stones with their style of rock based on black American blues ranked #1 with me--don't tell anyone, but even ahead of the Zep (Led Zeppelin, in fact--you can look it up in the musty, dusty--Hammer of the Gods: The Led Zeppelin Saga-- history books with actual paper or on the infernal google machine if you wish.)

Back then when I knew everything, I looked down on the Deadheads and their constant quest to attend the next Grateful Dead show.  Sure, my album collection contained Skeletons from the Closet
and the double live album known as Steal Your Face.

Nevertheless, some of the long, live, jams on the latter like Sugaree just seemed too slow and turgid.  Probably should have listened to the Dead while doing mushrooms rather than Pink Floyd to fully enjoy the American psychedelic jams.

As have aged and hopefully mellowed a bit however, have come to enjoy the intricacy and entwined interaction between the band members as melodic and delightful.  Also, they never played the same song the same way twice.  Not for them to become a legends band playing their hits in Vegas "residencies," playing it all over and over again.  Even though they reformed without Jerry Garcia to play again in 50th anniversary shows it still sounded fresh and fun.

Although Jerry has gone to that great Greatful Dead jam in the sky--where we will all go some day, at least the cool people--the music still sounds as great as the first song on their first album, Golden Road to Unlimited Devotion:
See that girl, barefootin' along,
Whistlin' and singin', she's a carryin' on.
There's laughing in her eyes, dancing in her feet,
She's a neon-light diamond and she can live on the street.
Hey hey, hey, come right away
Come and join the party every day.

Russian Pilots Don;t Fear the Reaper (MQ-9 version)

Gfycat GIF

Video purports to show a Russian pilot fly, in increasingly crowded Syrian airspace, underneath a US Reaper drone.
http://warisboring.com/articles/there-are-way-too-many-warplanes-flying-over-syria/

[That’s an MQ-9 Reaper drone, of the kind commonly used by the United States in targeted killing campaigns. The video, uploaded to YouTube by the Russian Defense Ministry today, was filmed from the inside of a Russian jet cockpit, and you can see the pilot in the cockpit’s reflection. The video is captioned simply and in English: “The presence of aerial vehicles in the air space of Syria has increased.”]
http://www.popsci.com/russian-pilot-films-american-drone-from-cockpit

Any time military jets from different countries with opposing aims fly over a country, as over Syria now, possibilities of bloodshed loom.  With my food old US of A flying the bulk of the Missions, I worry 'bout out blokes, especially since US plans to move to a F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, a plane with obvious, substantial flaws like lacking software to fire the damn cannon on the plane.

Can't fire the Damn Cannon!

Sure, stuff happens when you design new jet fighters, as you hear from a former test pilot relating a total cluster fuck of trying to fly a new plane with extra fuel off a too short runway.  This amounts to more than just old fighter pilot's stories; these planes also protect the US and by extension your ass and mine.  Don't know 'bout y'all but I sort of want to keep my ass intact.

We all can do the research and write our congress critters informed letters asking for better planning and decision making.

People, Relax, Refrain from Death Threats Over a Game

C'mon, people, having rooted for my FL Gators even through the Muschump coaching reign, death threat towards him never entered my mind: http://network.yardbarker.com/college_football/article_external/michigan_punter_blake_oneill_getting_death_threats_suicide_suggestions_on_social_media/19733323

Nevertheless, the anonymity afforded gutless cowards on social media lets people leave all boundaries, reason, and good taste behind.  Show me someone who has never made a mistake and then we'll allow that person to throw the first stone.

Yet hiding behind the internet allows idiots to twit crap like this: @blakewoneill jump off of a cliff into a pool of spikes and cyanide

— Cakey (@jaaake_f1) October 17, 2015  (Emphasis added.  A trifle extreme, don't you think?)

The very nature of sports--except for soccer--means one team wins while their opponent loses.  Sure some games end innocuously unlike the Michigan punter and his egregious error in fumbling the attempt, but death threats just fall beyond the pale of civilization.  If you feel that strongly about a play in sports, put your name to it.

Hell, bagging on athletes can even lead to lucrative careers like that dick Skip Bayless.

The Michigan punter feels bad enough his last play lost the game for his team.  No need to threaten him like a spineless blowhard.

Okaloosa County, Florida, Conducts a Prayer Meeting at School Board Meeting--Anarchy Ensues

This explains the difficulty in establishing religion in schools or at county commission meetings or other government entities.  Which religion ought we officially use?

Presumably, most people mean some form of Christianity, and they usually mean the more fundamental versions.  Some of those brands hate Catholicism and the Pope.  My Missouri Lutheran Synod tends towards more conservative end of the spectrum but by no means gets as whacked out as some of the Bible thumpers speaking in this clip.

For the Lord's sake, can't we all just take a deep breathe and consider consequences of our actions?  I actually favor prayer before meeting but if we allow one religion to perform the prayers, then we have to allow by law allow all religions to speak, even Satanists.  While supporting the Constitutional right of people to worship as they wish, nevertheless we ought to leave prayer out of public institutions.

First of all, happy World Food Day everyone! World Food Day was set up to mark the creation of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), which has done great things in granting people regular access to good, fresh, healthy food. It’s also exactly five months since my global day of action, Food Revolution Day, campaigning for food education for every child. My Food Revolution Day petition to get practical food education on every school curriculum has had an overwhelming response – 1.6 million of you signed up, with supporters from every country in the world. Joe Starting '16 Campaign in 2017

[ (The Borowitz Report)—Vice-President Joe Biden will make a decision on whether to enter the 2016 Presidential race by early 2017, a close associate told supporters on Friday.

In an e-mail sent to potential donors, the former Senator Ted Kaufman, a longtime friend and confidant of the Vice-President, wrote that “Joe is still trying to sort things out,” but promised that his decision will come “no later than January, 2017.”

“Joe is trying to decide whether running for President is a good idea, or, conversely, whether it is a bad idea,” Kaufman wrote. “He is very grateful to all of you for your patience as he works through this process, and he promises that he’ll have big news for you by next January.”

“My message to you today is, hang in there,” he wrote.

Kaufman acknowledged that deciding to run for President a full two months after the election “would complicate Joe’s path to the White House,” but promised, “If, in January, Joe decides he’s in, he will be all in. And we hope you’ll be with him.”]
http://www.newyorker.com/humor/borowitz-report/biden-to-decide-on-2016-bid-by-early-2017

Besides, Biden acts like a creep: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/10/17/joe-biden-narc-in-chief.html:
During his failed presidential campaign in 1988, Biden had to cop not only to getting an F during his law school days for cheating but to having ripped off speeches by John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, and Hubert Humphrey. Even more amazingly, Biden cribbed biographical details from British Labour politician Neil Kinnock, including lines about ancestors who “would come up [from coal mines] after 12 hours and play football.” What kind of politician plagiarizes not simply other people’s word but other people’s lives? That’s not a storybook, man, that’s a nutjob.

My Footbal Ethical Dilemma: To watch or not to watch

Another football season has started, and my dilemma returns: whether to watch my beloved FL Gators and Miami Dolphins or whether to give up supporting the game which turns young men's brains to mush.

Adrian Johnson had barely became an adult, only 25 years old, and his brain had aged before its time.  Collisions perhaps for 3 years in junior high school,  also 3 years in high school, and 3 to 4 in college expose young men's brains to the threat of repeated concussions or simply repeated blows to the head, the forces behind the diagnoses of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy.

For a young man to have developed that condition by age 25 should give pause to football officials at every level, plus we dedicated fans who support the games with passion and mucho dinero, tons of money.

But we fans love watching our modern gladiators do battle on a football field.  Hell, crucify a few christians and ancient Romans would feel right at home watching our gladiatorial contests.  Yet in America today, guess we'd have to crucify some Muslims to satisfy right wing blood lust and our time travelling Romans, making them feel right at home

[HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A former NFL lineman from Pennsylvania who killed himself at 25 had a brain disease that has been linked to repeated blows to the head, researchers confirmed Wednesday.

Adrian Robinson Jr.'s diagnosis of chronic traumatic encephalopathy was confirmed through officials at a brain bank at Boston University.

Family lawyer Ben Andreozzi said that Robinson had several concussions during two seasons in the league.

Robinson, of Harrisburg, played for Temple University in Philadelphia before playing for Pittsburgh, Denver and San Diego.

"He went from being one of the nicest guys you'd ever want to talk to, to having a darker edge at times," Andreozzi said. "The family started noticing changes in his behavior, and didn't know why."]  emphasis added
http://pro32.ap.org/article/autopsy-nfl-ex-player-who-killed-himself-had-brain-injury

[Researchers with the Department of Veterans Affairs and Boston University have now identified the degenerative disease known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, in 96 percent of NFL players that they’ve examined and in 79 percent of all football players. The disease is widely believed to stem from repetitive trauma to the head, and can lead to conditions such as memory loss, depression and dementia.

In total, the lab has found CTE in the brain tissue in 131 out of 165 individuals who, before their deaths, played football either professionally, semi-professionally, in college or in high school.

Forty percent of those who tested positive were the offensive and defensive linemen who come into contact with one another on every play of a game, according to numbers shared by the brain bank with FRONTLINE. That finding supports past research suggesting that it’s the repeat, more minor head trauma that occurs regularly in football that may pose the greatest risk to players, as opposed to just the sometimes violent collisions that cause concussions.

But the figures come with several important caveats, as testing for the disease can be an imperfect process. Brain scans have been used to identify signs of CTE in living players, but the disease can only be definitively identified posthumously. As such, many of the players who have donated their brains for testing suspected that they had the disease while still alive, leaving researchers with a skewed population to work with.

Even with those caveats, the latest numbers are “remarkably consistent” with past research from the center suggesting a link between football and long-term brain disease, said Dr. Ann McKee, the facility’s director and chief of neuropathology at the VA Boston Healthcare System.

“People think that we’re blowing this out of proportion, that this is a very rare disease and that we’re sensationalizing it,” said McKee, who runs the lab as part of a collaboration between the VA and BU. “My response is that where I sit, this is a very real disease. We have had no problem identifying it in hundreds of players.”]

Shocking: Not getting vaccinated leads to measles outbreak

Back here on planet Earth with rational people, we understand vaccinations have helped almost eradicate diseases that have literally plagued the human race for centuries.

God damn it, it seems as evident as 1 + 1 equals 2 in a Euclidean numbering system, that which we commonly use.

So to those who oppose vaccinations, sit down and STFU!

[A case of measles has been linked to a megachurch in northern Tarrant County where a congregant recently traveled overseas.

Eagle Mountain International Church, about 50 miles northwest of Dallas, released a statement Tuesday that said a visitor attended a service who had been overseas and was exposed to measles.

“Therefore the congregation, staff at Kenneth Copeland Ministries and the daycare center on the property were exposed through that contact,” the statement said.]
http://thescoopblog.dallasnews.com/2013/08/measles-case-in-tarrant-county-tracked-back-to-megachurch-beside-eagle-mountain-lake.html/

[A Texas megachurch connected to a pastor who has openly questioned the benefits of modern medicine has been forced to host vaccination clinics after 21 members of the congregation contracted measles.

The outbreak started when a person who contracted measles overseas visited Eagle Mountain International Church in Newark, located about 20 miles north of Fort Worth, Texas.

Officials with area health departments said those affected by the outbreak range in age from 4-months to 44-years-old.]  Emphasis added to show these people as batshit crazy.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2403743/Measles-outbreak-Texas-megachurch-run-vaccine-denying-preacher-Kenneth-Copeland.html

[An outbreak of the measles at Kenneth Copeland's Texas megachurch has gotten some attention because (1) measles is something children are generally vaccinated for, these days and (2) Kenneth Copeland is, of course, an anti-vaccine crackpot. In what seems to be yet another bitterly ironic attempt by God to teach noisy religious fundamentalists what-for, the church has thus become the epicenter of a small but worrisome outbreak that has so far infected 10 and resulted in the Departmentof State Health Services issuing an alert spanning North Texas.]  (Italics inserted instuctiong in irony)
https://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/08/26/1234055/-Anti-vaccine-megachurch-hit-with-measles-epidemic-now-offering-free-vaccinations

Look, people with medical training who have done seiouis studies on vaccine autism links have found no links:
2013 CDC study[PDF - 204 KB] added to the research showing that vaccines do not cause ASD. The study looked at the number of antigens (substances in vaccines that cause the body’s immune system to produce disease-fighting antibodies) from vaccines during the first two years of life. The results showed that the total amount of antigen from vaccines received was the same between children with ASD and those that did not have ASD.

Vaccine ingredients do not cause autism.

One vaccine ingredient that has been studied specifically is thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative used to prevent contamination of multidose vials of vaccines. Research shows that thimerosal does not cause ASD. In fact, a 2004 scientific review by the IOM concluded that "the evidence favors rejection of a causal relationship between thimerosal–containing vaccines and autism." Since 2003, there have been nine CDC-funded or conducted studies[PDF - 316 KB] that have found no link between thimerosal-containing vaccines and ASD, as well as no link between the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine and ASD in children.]
From my uninformed view even though more children have received diagnoses of autism, perhaps these numbers of affected children have just seemed to arrive as vaccinations increased; this does not prove causation.Perhaps past had same numbers but we saw some as geniuses, some dunces, some just slow, and others weirdos.

[Instead {Nurses’ Study shows autism rates double with exposure to high levels of fine-particulate air pollution during pregnancy; strongest link in third trimester

So instead of supporting industries spweing petro-chemical pollutants  our societies should make more use of reuseable energy so as not to poison our children, companies like those of the Kochs:

The volume of Koch Industries' toxic output is staggering. According to the University of Massachusetts Amherst's Political Economy Research Institute, only three companies rank among the top 30 polluters of America's air, water and climate: ExxonMobil, American Electric Power and Koch Industries. Thanks in part to its 2005 purchase of paper-mill giant Georgia-Pacific, Koch Industries dumps more pollutants into the nation's waterways than General Electric and International Paper combined. The company ranks 13th in the nation for toxic air pollution. Koch's climate pollution, meanwhile, outpaces oil giants including Valero, Chevron and Shell. Across its businesses, Koch generates 24 million metric tons of greenhouse gases a year. (Emphasis added.)

See Justin's "Bieber"

Just kidding.  Blurred photo assaulted me from some Inside Edition type show and saw more than ever cared to see of Justin.  Jeezus, can't we give me and he some damn privacy?

Howzabout celebrating perhaps greatest achievement of the human race, landing men on the moon, instead?

CNN ran a story with link to archive of NASA Apollo images: "....The images themselves aren't new, but they were shared en masse recently on the Project Apollo Archive Flickr account.

The archive is maintained by space enthusiast Kipp Teague and includes Apollo-related digital images released into the public domain by NASA. It contains more than 12,000 photos."

And oh my dear Lord I find these stunningly beautiful.

NASA Finds New Winter Vacation Paradise: Planet Pluto

"‘It’s gorgeous': NASA discovers frozen water and blue skies on Pluto."

[Pluto has blue skies and patches of frozen water, according to the latest data out Thursday from NASA’s unmanned New Horizons probe, which made a historic flyby of the dwarf planet in July.

Never before has Pluto — a resident of the distant Kuiper Belt, a frigid region of the solar system beyond Neptune that is home to many comets and asteroids — been observed in such detail.

“Who would have expected a blue sky in the Kuiper Belt? It’s gorgeous,” said Alan Stern, New Horizons principal investigator from Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado.]

Our friends, Saudi Arabian Monarchy

What an almost criminal act and a travesty the Saudis got named to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights!

They enforce medieval sharia law, torture, and absolute repression of women. Dammit, I can't even type the words, so let me quote law professor Jonathan Turley:
The elevation of Saudi Arabia (in what appears now a secret deal with England) in 2013 to the United Nations Human Rights Council was to say the least controversial. After all, the Kingdom denies basic rights to women, bars basic religious freedom for non-Muslim (including the construction of any church in the Kingdom), engages in torture, and applies a medieval Sharia law that imposes grotesque and draconian punishments. It is widely viewed as the appropriate target (not a member) of the Council. Saudi Arabia has not wasted time in obstructing human rights measures. This week for example the Kingdom blocked plans for an international inquiry into human rights violations by all parties in the war in Yemen despite massive death counts among civilians in the last six months. It also announced at a meeting of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva that it will opposed any and all protections for gay people as anti-Islamic.http://jonathanturley.org/2015/10/02/saudi-2/#more-93681
It boggles the mind and absolutely buggers the imagination; makes me want to puke.  Dipwads!
