Elizabeth Warren at Netroots

The Nightwatchman: "When you're living under a bridge, man, all roads lead to home."

Mayor Nutter of the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, wants to make life easier for homeless people by outlawing feeding them.

Yes, and "Ignorance is Knowledge."

Makes me feel wonderful my Orlando, the City Mean, led the way.

[A growing number of cities across the United States are making it harder for the homeless.

Philadelphia recently banned outdoor feeding of people in city parks. Denver has begun enforcing a ban on eating and sleeping on property without permission. And this month, lawmakers in Ashland, Ore., will consider strengthening the town's ban on camping and making noise in public.

And the list goes on: Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami,Oklahoma City, Phoenix, San Diego and more than 50 other cities have previously adopted some kind of anti-camping or anti-food-sharing laws, according to the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty.

The ordinances are pitting city officials against advocates for the homeless. City leaders such as Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter say they want to improve the lives of homeless people and ensure public safety, while opponents of such laws argue that such regulations criminalize homelessness and make it harder to live on the streets.

"We're seeing these types of laws being proposed and passed all over the country," said Heather Johnson, an attorney at the homeless and poverty law center, which opposes many of the measures. "We think that criminalization measures such as these are counterproductive. Rather than address the root cause of homelessness, they perpetuate homelessness."]

Update for Pistol Packing Psychopath Preacher

Update to http://empireofdirt77.blogspot.com/2012/06/putting-fl-in-positive-light-n-fl.html
[The 59-year-old runs the Dove World Outreach Centre in Gainsville, Florida, whose congregation numbers just a few dozen.

The church is based in a 20-acre compound where Jones lives with his wife, Sylvia, and is said to regularly patrol the grounds with a pistol strapped to his hip.

He took over the church in 1996 on the death of its founder, Dr Don Northrup, after spending 20 years as a missionary in Europe, including Germany...

Dove World Outreach is funded by the pastor's furniture firm, TS & Company, which buys vintage items from Europe and sells them in the US. The employees are members of the church, who are understood to work for no wages and live rent-free in run-down properties

owned by the pastor and his wife.]
htttp://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/afghanistan/8422880/Pastor-Terry-Jones-a-homophobic-used-furniture-salesman-with-a-love-of-controversy.html

[Terry Jones, the man behind the action, is the pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center, a church that manages to attract a Sunday congregation of just 50 people, members of the radical fringe of the evangelical movement. Jones, a 58-year-old former hotel manager with a distinctive mustache, is also the author of a polemic book titled "Islam Is of the Devil."

'Climate of Fear and Control'

In the United States, Jones has already attracted attention on several occasions as an Islamophobic provocateur. What is less well known is that the pastor led a charismatic evangelical church, the Christian Community of Cologne, in the western German city up until 2009. Last year, however, the members of the congregation kicked founder Jones out, because of his radicalism. One of the church's current leaders, Stephan Baar, also told the German news agency DPA that there had been suspicions of financial irregularities in the church surrounding Jones.

A "climate of fear and control" had previously prevailed in the congregation, says one former member of the church who does not want to be named. Instead of free expression, "blind obedience" was demanded, he says.

Various witnesses gave SPIEGEL ONLINE consistent accounts of the Jones' behavior. The pastor and his wife apparently regarded themselves as having been appointed by God, meaning opposition was a crime against the Lord. Terry and Sylvia Jones allegedly used these methods to ask for money in an increasingly insistent manner, as well as making members of the congregation carry out work...

Now the whole world is condemning Jones for his planned burning of copies of the Koran. Schäfer, for his part, sees Jones as a fanatic who is courting global media attention because he couldn't cope with the "immense loss of power and significance."]

Putting FL in Positive Light: N FL pastor/psychopath hangs Obama in effigy

This freakin' nutjob makes me so angry can't even bring myself to check his bio but seem to remember his "church" worked as a sweat shop in Europe, so maybe the fool ain't from my great state although his level of sustained idiocy does qualify him for election to the FL Legislature.

So perhaps he has little knowledge of the extensive history of lynching of black males in my state even unto the sub category of spectacle lynchings.

Have suspicion that this kook/"pastor" knows exactly the history of lynching in FL and the United States of Assassins.

Nevertheless refuse to judge; hopefully the Secret Service can find some laws broken by this vulgar, hateful display.

[UPDATE, 2:30 p.m.: The Secret Service is investigating Pastor Terry Jones' Dove World Outreach Center for hanging a dummy of President Barack Obama outside of its church...

...Apparently getting antsy from a lack of publicity about its crushing ignorance and stupidity, Pastor Terry Jones' Dove World Outreach Center now features a gallows with a Barack Obama dummy hanging above American and gay pride flags, according to the Smoking Gun.]

[(17) Roger Rosenblatt, Confronting the Past (17th February, 2000)

That ordinary people did these things is deeply disturbing; that they manufactured a social rationale for their acts is more disturbing still. Look for a while at the picture of the lynching of Rubin Stacy, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 1930. Look first at Stacy, then turn to the little girl in the summer dress, looking at Stacy, and then to the man behind her, perhaps her father, in the spotless white shirt and slacks and the clean white skimmer. They will stand there forever, admiring the proof of their civilization.]
http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/USAlynching.htm

I, your not so humble blogger, find the following picture infinitely disturbing but perhaps understandable given the ritual of a Saturday night in the south for white males: get drunk, kill a Negro, go to church Sunday morning, and then take your kids out to look at a lynched corpse of a black man, and laugh as the children mutilate the bodies, probably just the boys with pocket knives as girls would not want to bloody their Sunday school dresses even as the spectacle defiles their very souls.

[Rubin Stacey, an African American man accused of "threatening and frightening a white woman," was lynched in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on July 19, 1935. White children and adults observe his corpse hanging from a tree in this photograph.]

[Whether because of Williams' efforts, or simply because the world has kept turning, one of the most atrocious chapters of Florida history is getting another look. The six men who tortured Claude Neal in the woods have never been publicly named. Those who kept his severed fingers in jars as souvenirs have not had to explain. Greenwood, a place where the names on the church rolls haven't changed, has not had to face its history. Its people — the shrinking number who know — are still protecting the reputations of killers.]

Wish I  could copy/steal an image, but can't so you'll have to go there: http://www.zazzle.com/i_found_jesus_tees-235184387079672962.

Just go read her.  You'll laugh; I promise, or at least you'll feel mild cognitive dissonance.  Copy of her first cartoon ever, which also made me laugh, albeit with a rueful chuckle as my whole empire of dirt just about doing something--anything, no matter how wretched or literary deranged--before taking my long dirtnap.

Strategy vs Tactics: Obama team sucks at both

Oh for Clausewitz's sake, more on this later.

[A former top terrorism official at the CIA has warned that President Barack Obama's controversial drone programme is far too indiscriminate in hitting targets and could lead to such political instability that it creates terrorist safe havens.

Obama's increased use of drones to attack suspected Islamic militants inPakistan, Afghanistan, Somalia and Yemen has become one of the most controversial aspects of his national security policy. He has launched at least 275 strikes in Pakistan alone; a rate of attack that is far higher than his predecessor George W Bush.

Defenders of the policy say it provides a way of hitting high-profile targets, such as al-Qaida number two, Abu Yahya al-Libi. But critics say the definition of militant is used far too broadly and there are too many civilian casualties. The London-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism estimates up to 830 civilians, including many women and children, might have been killed by drone attacks in Pakistan, 138 in Yemen and 57 in Somalia. Hundreds more have been injured.

Now Robert Grenier, who headed the CIA's counter-terrorism center from 2004 to 2006 and was previously a CIA station chief in Pakistan, has told the Guardian that the drone programme is targeted too broadly. "It [the drone program] needs to be targeted much more finely. We have been seduced by them and the unintended consequences of our actions are going to outweigh the intended consequences," Grenier said in an interview.]
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jun/05/al-qaida-drone-attacks-too-broad

[Pakistan's foreign ministry has summoned a senior US diplomat to lodge a formal protest over a series of drone strikes in its volatile tribal regions.

There have been eight drone attacks in Pakistan's north-western tribal territory over the past two weeks.

US officials say a strike on Monday targeted al-Qaeda's second-in-command, Abu Yahya al-Libi, but it is unclear if he was among 15 killed in the assault.

Pakistan's call for an end to strikes comes amid a rift with Washington.

It says that drone strikes represented a "clear red line for Pakistan".

Tension between the reluctant allies has been intensified by a dispute over Pakistan's closure of supply routes to Nato troops in Afghanistan, after a Nato air strike along the Afghan border killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.

Pakistan's foreign ministry summoned Washington's deputy ambassador to Islamabad, Richard Hoagland, to "officially convey the government's serious concern regarding drone attacks in Pakistani territory".]

[
NEW DELHI: US defense secretary Leon Panetta will encourage India to take a more active role in Afghanistan as international forces draw down after a decade of war, US officials said on Tuesday as the Pentagon chief arrived in New Delhi for two days of talks.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, acknowledged the longstanding rivalry between India and Pakistan for influence in Afghanistan but insisted that both countries had an interest in working with the international community to ensure stability in their northern neighbour.

"There is a risk that the tensions and historical mistrust between India and Pakistan could lead them to view their respective roles in Afghanistan as being in conflict," one official said. "This is not predestined. This does not have to be the case."]

At Last, a Bill RepubliKKKans Will Support

[...I’m proposing a stimulus package that is specifically structured to attract support from the Republican caucus, and I urge you to pass it right away.

It’s called the G.O.P. Glorification and Obama Disparagement Act, and here’s how it works:

Pass this bill and we’ll immediately inject over $575 billion in taxpayer money into the economy that will be spent on brutally negative advertisements against me and my Administration. Pass this bill and, over the next six months, we’ll inject an additional $385 billion that will be used to denigrate me personally, elevate the esteem of my opponent, and generally undermine the effectiveness of my Presidency.

In doing so, we’ll put millions of Americans back to work immediately—printing and mailing pamphlets about Solyndra, making phone calls to key swing states suggesting that I was born in Kenya, Photoshopping pictures of me smoking pot and wearing burkas, and travelling across the Middle East and Asia in order to undermine dozens of foreign-policy initiatives....] emphasis added

Shanghaied to Work Queen's Jubilee for Free

Austerity for thee (99%) and none for the 1%.  The irony, it burns!

"Her Majesty is a Pretty Nice Girl..."

"...but she doesn't have a lot to say."

She still has some really rocking residences, however.  So much for British austerity.

Seriously, the whole damn country throws her a party because she survived 60 years on the throne without losing her head while her Tory government leads her country off the financial cliff with budget cuts rather than stimulus so people could have jobs and get the economy moving?

At least in my country, we have no pretensions about a noble class, instead brazenly beatifying those who accumulate the most $, or dosh as Ricky wrote..

Thus concludes my feelgood post of the day.

Olivia, Infant Member of 99%

Just lovin' livin' in a battleground state with ads saying cutting the deficit remains most important thing in the United States of Aggression.

We have to cut entitlements, pundits and politicians all say.

What about Olivia?

What about her, Rep. Paul Ryan, RepubliKKKan, state of ass clown?

[My name is Olivia. I can’t hold a sign because I’m so little.

I was born with club feet. One was so bad, it was nearly upside-down. My feet have been stretched into place and casted into position every week since I was 3 weeks old. It really hurts. I’m 3 and a half months old now, so I’ve done that a lot. It costs about $500 each time. (You can see one of my casts peeking out under my dress.)

On March 21, 2012 I had my first surgery, because the stretching wasn’t working. That cost nearly $9,000, but if my feet don’t get fixed, I’ll never be able to walk.

Medicaid is paying to fix my feet. My Daddy is a disabled veteran, but his insurance won’t cover my feet. My Mom is trying to raise my 3 brothers and I while she wracks up student loans getting her college degree, because minimum wage isn’t enough to keep a roof over our heads.

WIC is paying for my formula, because Mom’s milk never came in. She feels kinda bad about that, but sometimes these things just happen.

I hear that some people want to get rid of Medicaid, the Pell Grant, and WIC, so that the 1% can have even more tax breaks. Well, I want to be able to walk. I need to eat. And my Mom would like to be able to provide for me better someday. I don’t understand why people want to take that away from me. What did I do wrong?]

Florida Secedes from the Union--Again!

Guess rational people might want to forgive FL Governor 48.9% for ignorance of the very essence of how government works in the United States; his career in Medicaid fraud only taught him how to bilk the government, not to lawfully run a state.

Under the Constitution of the United States of Assimilation, the federal  government passes laws on matters of national import, pesky little matters like insuring lawfully qualified voters get to vote without getting purged from voter roles on the basis of flawed information.

Nevertheless, the morons running my state seem to think they can just ignore the lawful orders of the federal government and continue with their flawed voter purge.

[Florida will defy a federal warning to stop purging people the state suspects aren't U.S. citizens from voter registration rolls.

Despite a Justice Department letter, objections from county elections officials and evidence that a disproportionate number are voters of color, Florida Secretary of State Ken Detzner's office planned to continue scrubbing the election rolls, a spokesman said Friday. Gov. Rick Scott (R) ordered the search for potentially ineligible voters.

“We have an obligation to make sure the voter rolls are accurate and we are going to continue forward and do everything that we can legally do to make sure that ineligible voters cannot vote,” said Chris Cate, a spokesman for Detzner. “We are firmly committed to doing the right thing and preventing ineligible voters from being able to cast a ballot. We are not going to give up our efforts to make sure the voter rolls are accurate."] emphasis added

Since I live in a state that gets to pick and choose what laws to follow, I hereby declare Bank of America an ongoing criminal conspiracy and declare their ill gotten gains forfeit.

Thereby, I shall appropriate some of that $ to my own use, however many bills I can stuff in my pocket.

Lest you or criminal law call that bank robbery, remember that in FL we get to pick laws we want to follow and ignore those we don't, just like Governor 48.9% and former beer lobbyist turned Secretary of the State of FL, Ken Detzner.

[...But like many of the truly bad ideas in history, the present-day version of Bank of America was the product of a testosterone overdose. The concept of an overmassive, acquiring-everything-in-sight, bicoastal megabank was hatched in the terminal inferiority complex of a greed-sick asshole – actually two greed-sick assholes, both of them CEOs of Southern regional banks, who launched a cartoonish arms race of bank acquisitions that would ultimately turn the American business world upside down.

The antagonists were Hugh McColl Jr. and Ed Crutchfield, the respective leaders of North Carolina National Bank (which would take over Bank of America) and First Union (which turned into Wachovia), both based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Obsessed with each other, these two men transformed their personal competition into one of the most ridiculous and elaborate penis-measuring contests in the history of American business – even engaging in the garish Freudian spectacle of vying to see who would have the tallest skyscraper in Charlotte....]

RepubliKKKans Hate Obama: Deliberately trying to tank the economy

And Martin Bashir calls them on it.  When will the so called liberal media wake up and tell the truth?  Don't hold your breathe.

[Even when an independent analytics firm like Moody's estimates that the American Jobs Act would create about 2 Million new jobs, and raise GDP by a full 2 percentage points-- Mr Cantor prefers his own form of leadership, which is designed to crush Job Creation.

And Mr Cantor's approach has been shared by another 'Leader' in Job Crushing -- the Speaker of the House, John Boehner, a man who also made his monthly appearance today.
[...]

Bashir:

I can tell you the Speaker [...] is also too much of a coward to owe up to his all-important role in ensuring that the Economic Recovery of America is as fragile as it it today.

So well done Mr Cantor and Mr Boehner, Congratulations! You always wanted to undermine the President -- but what you've done, is undermine the country.]

"Winning" in Afghanistan: Country now supplies 70% of opium in the world

Every time you see Leon Paneta on TV or read him quoted about "winning" in Afghanistan, mentally impose the coke addled visage of Charlie Sheen saying "Winning!" as his career went down in flames.

The fantasy of the current Masters of War--that Afghanistan will magically turn into a western style democracy insulated from tribal warfare and without vestiges of the Taliban--they delude themselves with fantasies more unlikely than any drug fueled hallucination.

The Pashtun tribes still have not recognized the artificial border.

Just indiscriminately blowing people up, whether in Afghanistan or Pakistan or Yemen, with drone strikes and will only create more people bent--with reason--on revenge who we will then call terrorists.

[Afghanistan used to dominate the opium production market until the Taliban banned it.

But over the course of the war in Afghanistan, opium production has steadily increased in that region.

Afghanistan is now responsible for 76 percent of the world's opium supply.

WFTV will update this story as it develops.]

Levon Helm: May 26, 1940 – April 19, 2012

Mark Lavon "Levon" Helm, drummer and singer and mandolin player, etc,. for the Band, passed away recently.  Ironically, only started listening to The Band in 1978 after seeing their final concert appearance put on film (Scorsese?) in the movie The Last Waltz..

In interview in the film, Robbie Robertson explained they decided to quit touring after 20 years on the road as road lies littered with fatalities.

Ironically, The Band reformed, sans Robertson, and the road did claim the life of Richard Manuel after a show in Winter Park, FL, near my dirt pile, which sort of pisses me off.

Rich rock and rollers should kill themselves the old fashioned way, through alcoholism and drug abuse.

Irony Bone Sprained

Hard to imagine after near half a year w/out a 'puter, but all the damn bad news in the wold, plus insanity, the inhumanity of psychopaths, even flesh eating freaks--all gleefully reported on my teevee w/ macabre charm by presenters--all have combined to get me down, kind of like scene from 1 of my fave movies: Wild at Heart, a surreal David Lynch adaptation of Snow White story with Nicholas Cage and, more importantly, Laura Dern.

Comes a scene w/ Lulu, played by Dern, driving down the highway w/ Sailor Ripley, Cage, sleeping in the back seat of 1 convertible about '67 T'bird.

Lulu changes AM radio stations frantically trying to find some Rock and Roll music rather than bad news blaring from the speaker: robbery, rape ,murder, maybe even decapitation.
She slams on the brakes and swerves to shoulder of the road, leaps put and screams to now awake Sailor that she refuses to drive a single more mile until he finds some music on the radio.

Feels like that for me, what with all non-profit emails subscribed to: save whales, Sumatran tigers,  coral reefs, honey freaking bees, and polar bears, etc.

Sorry, screw the bears.

With limited attention and lifespan, plus scarce resources, will have to concentrate on issues closer to my humble empire of dirt, perhaps most importantly feeding hungry humans and children.

Here in Orlando, The City Beautiful, the local Christian Service Center started a Love Pantry program to feed children during weekends and summers when schools let out.  They need more resources.

Kids do not learn as well when hungry.

Poorly educated kids have less avenues for success, which can lead to criminal activity.  The kid you feed today might not rob you in years to come.

[ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. —

Money woes may force a program aimed at helping to feed hungry Orange County children to shut down.

More than 3,000 families depend on food pantries to help feed their children. But a surge in donations has slowly dropped off.

"When you are worried about what you will eat and when you will eat again, it is very tough to concentrate on your times tables," said Rock Lake Elementary Principal Lynne Wassatt.

One in every three students at Rock Lake Elementary School does not have a place to call home. And even the children who have homes don't always get enough food to eat.

"Wonderful children, amazing parents who work very hard. But it is difficult to make ends meet, even with minimum wage," said Wassatt.

Two-hundred-sixty-four of Rock Lake's 275 students qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. But that does not help them when school is out.

"The weekend is always the hardest," said Wassatt.

To help keep the children fed, First Baptist Orlando gave the Christian Service Center $28,000 to start the Love Pantries program. It's a program that is now in 38 Orange County schools.

"There are fewer children who come in on Mondays who say, 'We're hungry'" said Wassatt.

This year, Love Pantries fed 3,200 families.

But the center is struggling to get the money it needs to keep the pantries filled for summer school and for next year. It has raised only $60,000 of the $150,000 it needs.

"We now found out the summer needs are greater than what we anticipated. We're trying to figure out how to get food out there," said Robert Stuart of the Christian Service Center.
