The Meaning of Memorial Day

After perusing various adverts for Memorial Day furniture sales in the paper, had to remind myself of the true meaning of the Day: to remember those who gave their lives for these United States, fighting our wars. 

My good fortune and that of my family's means we have not lost any one close to us in war.   Nevertheless the Viet Nam War reached long tentacles of death to my sleepy ocean side town, claiming one Robert Gordon Birdsell  in 1969.  

Precisely because  blood of our soldiers pays a price so dear, also you'll see a photo of protesters against that war to remind that wars our country undertakes ought to become considered as business of the people, aired in public discussion rather than behind closed doors.

That constitutes democracy.
