The 1% Replies, Proud of Perfidy

[Someone at the Board of Trade is getting cheeky with the Occupy Chicago protests. This photo was taken by someone at the protests. It shows offices at the Board of Trade Building eight stories up with "We Are The 1%" taped to the windows. If only someone could hurl rocks that high.]

Capitalism for Commonweal

Sounds like a contradiction to we in A-Merry-Ca, but capitalism for the public good can allocate resources to benefit the public good.

Of course, we can't do that in the red white and blue USA even though they can do it in India.

Makes me proud. (Does anyone know of an emoticon to indicate sarcasm?)

USA! USA! USA!

[IDG News Service - India is closer to its much-touted target of a $35 tablet, with DataWind, a wireless Web access products maker in Montreal, designing and making a device that it will sell to the government for $50.

The country's Minister of Human Resource Development, Kapil Sibal, launched the tablet, called Aakash, on Wednesday. The tablet will likely be distributed at a subsidy to students in higher education in the country.

DataWind has been able to get to a price of $38 for the tablet which has a 7-inch display with 800-by-480 pixel resolution, 256MB of RAM, 2GB flash storage, and a 366MHz processor from Connexant. The tablet runs the Android 2.2 operating system.

Local sales taxes, performance guarantees, and an exacting replacement warranty have taken the price to the government up to $50, said Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO of DataWind in an interview.

The target is to get to $35 per unit, inclusive of warranty, once volumes pick up.

The Indian government is expected to buy 8 million to 10 million devices by March 31, 2012, the end of the Indian fiscal year, Tuli said. The first order of 100,000 units will be executed from a factory in Hyderabad over the next six weeks, he added.

Tuli said that Sibal's vision and the commitment of business from the government had driven the company to accept the challenge to come up with a device at about $35.]

Finally, Palin on Fox Makes Some Sense

Not anything that she speaks on air, of course, but the reason a RepubliKKKan like Fox owner Roger Ailes would put a nitwit quitter from Alaska on his (read OUR) airwaves.

[Fox News hired former Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin not because of her intellectual ability or integrity, but because she is easy on the eyes.

“I hired Sarah Palin because she was hot and got ratings,” Roger Ailes, the chairman of Fox News declared in a recent interview with Frazier Moore of the Associated Press.] emphasis added
http://www.irishcentral.com/ent/Fox-News-reveals-why-they-really-hired-Sarah-Palin---VIDEO-131212094.html

Of course now that she has seized that key slice of the electorate--the used to do drugs and have out of wedlock sex but now cloaks herself in conservative "christianity"--one dearly hopes she does recant and actually run for President.

She could use the slogan, "Not as crazy as Bachmann or Perry."

[A new book is making unworldly claims about the U.S. ex-vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, claiming she had cheated on her husband, had a one night stand with a basketball star and has a history of drug use.

The upcoming book "The Rogue" by controversial author Joe McGinnis, due to hit shelves on Sept. 20, looks to uncover the "real Sarah Palin."

The Daily Mail reports that the book claims that Palin snorted cocaine off a 55 gallon oil drum with her husband while snowmobiling with friends as well as smoked marijuana with one of her college professors in secret.

The author says that Palin, who is now 47-years-old, had a one-night stand with Miami Heat basketball star Glen Rice less than a year before she eloped with her husband Todd. She is said to have had the whirl wind romance with the basketball star in her younger sister Molly's University of Alaska dorm room. She met the incredibly tall player in 1987 when she covered a college basketball tournament as a sports reporter for KTUU television in Alaska.]

Also from the Guardian, sort of and ode to the grifter in thief.
[Long past the time many had ceased caring, Sarah Palin announced on Wednesday night that she was not running for the presidency in 2012. Fox News alone of America's cable networks thought her announcement was more significant than the death of Steve Jobs. Everyone else reacted with a quick shrug and moved on.

It had become obvious that Palin was not going to be a candidate. The reality is that Palin didn't stand a chance, so badly has she squandered her political capital within the Republican party over the past year with cheap stunts, such as an on-again, off-again grandiose national bus tour. Her career in national politics as a candidate is over.]

Democracy in Action, Not Inaction

hat tip Attytood at Philly Daily Mews..

Call Me Gator Blues

Newspapers report a FL Gators defensive lineman faces charges for hitting a former AL player after the game this past Saturday.

Wags amongst us might observe that made only Dominique Easley's second hit of the night. The first came in 3rd quarter of the game when he made a tackle in the offensive backfield and celebrated as if he'd just won the Super Bowl, disconcerting in that his team well on the way to a rout and he'd spent most of the game five yards back in defensive backfield, mostly trying to grab a shoelace of an AL running back as they left cleat marks on his chest.

Also, you'd think a left guard who followed offensive genius Charley Weiss to UF from Notre Dame, a redshirt senior, would have learned how to hold an opponent rather than give up a sack and get the QB hurt. Giving up 10 yards will always prove better than getting your QB concussed or knocked out of the game, and almost get his leg broken.

Also, an astute observer of football might question trying to block stud AL linebacker, Courtney Upshaw, on a blitz with just a tight end.

Did not work well, leading to a crucial sack.

Then seeing Offensive Buddha, Charlie Weiss, sitting on the bench in 3rd and 4th quarters with his arms folded across his belly and just as mute as any big bellied Buddha statue even with his QB sitting right next to him.

In interviews with the Big Buddha after the game, he said the injury to QB John Brantley destroyed the Gator gameplan.

Charlie, don't you get paid the big bucks to coach, especially during a game when time for adjustments come?

My eyes have seen coaches on sidelines with headphones talking to coaches in press box trying to figure out something--any blasted thing--that works on offense. Pro teams even take pictures of
coverages to coach DURING the game. Does anyone on the Gator staff even have a clipboard and Sharpie to draw up adjustments during a game?

Oh well, gators and this Gator fan have tiny little brains, no fear of humans, and iffen you ain't made boots from our hides, we might get you next time.

Beat GA!

Capitalism Kills

Every country on earth now has a hybrid system of government combining free market and socialist principles.

Free markets allow capitalism and socialism provides government help for those with need.

This explains why India has launched an effort to provide affordable computer tablets to citizens.

$2,000 open heart surgery? Preposterous. The country must have people concerned about health and welfare of citizens instead of raining down dollars on corporations.

[NEW DELHI — India is launching a cheap tablet computer it says will deliver modern technology to help lift villagers out of poverty.

The computer, called Aakash, or "sky" in Hindi, is the latest in a series of cheap Indian innovations that include a 100,000 rupee ($2,040) Nano car, a 750 rupee ($15) water purifier and $2,000 open-heart surgery.

Government subsidies promise a $35 price tag for students and teachers, with a regular retail price of about $45 from manufacturer Datawind.] emphasis added

Oldest Pubs on Earth in Ireland

Put me down in highly un-surprised column.

[But Sean’s Bar in Athlone isn’t just the oldest pub in Ireland. According to the lads at the Guinness Book of World Records, it’s the oldest pub in Europe. Excavations beneath the current pub have revealed wattle and daub walls, bits of crockery (mugs and the like) and self-minted coins the bar would use for trade with clients dating back to 900 A.D.]

Schrodinger'ss Cat: "As long as you just accept these paradoxes, quantum theory works fine."

The article linked below illustrates my existential philosophy; sure in an infinite universe where all possibilities occur, a random collection of atoms which parents named Daniel Allen Hill had to happen.

Not exactly the religious idea of Creator but perhaps amounts to a random # generator, not particularly acceptable orthodoxy at my church.

Nevertheless if Einstein himself expressed this as an either/or proposition, this perhaps puts the question of causation a bit above my ken and pay grade.

Whatever the answer, I perceive my existence within this infinitely improbable collection of atoms.

I yam what I yam!

Accepting the paradox of our being and becoming, where do we go from there?

Descartes famously wrote, "Cogito ergo sum" (French: Je pense, donc je suis; English: I think, therefore I am;" but Freud might write that overestimates the importancce of rationality in human existence.

No one who knows me could accuse me of a surfeit of rationality, since actions seldom spring from plans. Retired now too early from workaday world, the flow just kind of carries me along.

Nevertheless, my existential philosophy disallows thinking of my thoughts as as merely operations of what Freud called "superego" or what Skinner would see as merely the results of all the conditioning received during my life.

If either of the above were "true," from where would spring my whimsy, humour, seeing satire and irony in all things; whence laughter and tears and love and loss?

Perhaps between positions of Freud and Skinner--my consciousness determined by sub-conscious or determined by outside conditioning--we can place Jung's ideas of the collective unconscious existence and theory of archetypes.

Since life has led me to no greater archetype than Jesusof the Gospels, we can lead ourselves to a restatement of Descate's proposition, I care about other humans, so I live as a human.

I care, therefore I am.

[Quantum mechanics is more than a hundred years old, but we still don’t understand it. In recent years, however, physicists have found a fresh enthusiasm for exploring the questions about quantum theory that were swept under the rug by its founders. Advances in experimental methods make it possible to test ideas about why objects on the scale of atoms follow different rules from those that govern objects on the everyday scale. In effect, this becomes an enquiry into the sense in which things exist at all.

In 1900 the German physicist Max Planck suggested that light—a form of electromagnetic waves—consists of tiny, indivisible packets of energy. These particles, called photons, are the “quanta” of light. Five years later Albert Einstein showed how this quantum hypothesis explained the way light kicks electrons out of metals—the photoelectric effect. It was for this, not the theory of relativity, that he won his Nobel prize.

The early pioneers of quantum theory quickly discovered that the seemingly innocuous idea that energy is grainy has bizarre implications. Objects can be in many places at once. Particles behave like waves and vice versa. The act of witnessing an event alters it. Perhaps the quantum world is constantly branching into multiple universes.

As long as you just accept these paradoxes, quantum theory works fine. Scientists routinely adopt the approach memorably described by Cornell physicist David Mermin, as “shut up and calculate.” They use quantum mechanics to calculate everything from the strength of metal alloys to the shapes of molecules. Routine application of the theory underpins the miniaturisation of electronics, medical MRI imaging and the development of solar cells, to name just a few burgeoning technologies.] emphasis added to article

Occupy Wall Street Gets Traditional Union Support

The city's most experienced agitators—the labor and community groups that typically organize local marches, rallies and sit-ins—have been largely missing from the Occupy Wall Street protest that is in its 13th day at Zuccotti Park in lower Manhattan.

But that's about to change.

A loose coalition of labor and community groups said Thursday that they would join the protest next week. They are organizing a solidarity march scheduled for Wednesday that is expected to start at City Hall and finish a few blocks south at Zuccotti Park.

“It's a responsibility for the progressive organizations in town to show their support and connect Occupy Wall Street to some of the struggles that are real in the city today,” said Jon Kest, executive director of New York Communities for Change...

But as the action nears the start of its third week, unions and community groups are eager to jump on board. They are motivated perhaps by a sense of solidarity and a desire to tap into its growing success, but undoubtedly by something else too—embarrassment that a group of young people using Twitter and Facebook have been able to draw attention to progressive causes in a way they haven't been able to in years.

Unions Support Occupy Wall Street

[New York City labor unions are preparing to back the unwieldy grassroots band occupying a park in Lower Manhattan, in a move that could mark a significant shift in the tenor of the anti-corporate Occupy Wall Street protests and send thousands more people into the streets.

The Transit Workers Union Local 100's executive committee, which oversees the organization of subway and bus workers, voted unanimously Wednesday night to support the protesters. The union claims 38,000 members. A union-backed organizing coalition, which orchestrated a large May 12 march on Wall Street before the protests, is planning a rally on Oct. 5 in explicit support. And SEIU 32BJ, which represents doormen, security guards and maintenance workers, is using its Oct. 12 rally to express solidarity with the Zuccotti Park protesters.]
