"Italian Monastery Seeks Savation in Beer
Praise the Lord and pass the beer!
They seem to have edged closer to my church, Lutheran.
[After the Oct. 30 quake, one of the few things left standing at the monastery was a small brewery, where for the past four years the monks have been making Nursia, a beer named for Norcia’s ancient Latin appellation.
Their brew may now be the salvation — symbolically, at least — not only of the monks’ sanctuary, but also of Norcia itself. This ancient walled city is a ghost town of ravaged churches and cracked palazzi, and is still struggling to recover from the strongest earthquake to strike Italy in 36 years.]

The Meaning of Memorial Day
After perusing various adverts for Memorial Day furniture sales in the paper, had to remind myself of the true meaning of the Day: to remember those who gave their lives for these United States, fighting our wars.
My good fortune and that of my family's means we have not lost any one close to us in war. Nevertheless the Viet Nam War reached long tentacles of death to my sleepy ocean side town, claiming one Robert Gordon Birdsell in 1969.
Precisely because blood of our soldiers pays a price so dear, also you'll see a photo of protesters against that war to remind that wars our country undertakes ought to become considered as business of the people, aired in public discussion rather than behind closed doors.
That constitutes democracy.

Reasons Trump Might Lose
Well thank the gods of Irony, despite my woe and fear and loathing that a carnival barker now has the presidential nomination for 1 of the 2 major parties, the asshole might lose. Nevertheless, I weep and tremble that this con artist, bankruptcy maven, and political embarrassment could even have a possibility of getting near the nuclear trigger.
C'mon, government and public service ain't 'a business. Do you want a buffoon negotiating with the Chinese or Putin? Rather better to have an ex-Secretary of State in our office of President!
