Stuff like this explains why Dr Who loves and hangs out with humans; we as a species have an extraordinary ability to adapt to new conditions and invent stuff just for the heck of it, the antithesis to top down design process which seeks to solve cetain problems.
Humans invent cool stuff and then see if wecan use it for anything.
This also means humanity as individuals also have boundless ability to do stupid stuff, like in, "Go get that other gas can and more bottle rockets, Zed."
[Computerworld - MIT engineers have succeeded in creating "biofilms," which combine bacterial cells with nonliving materials, such as gold nanoparticles, that can conduct electricity or emit light.
The hope is that biofilm, that slippery, slimy material made of bacteria that forms substances like dental plaque, may someday create functioning circuits that could be used to manufacture photovoltaic solar panels or act as "biosensors" that could sense toxins....
"It's an interesting way of thinking about materials synthesis, which is very different from what people do now, which is usually a top-down approach," Lu {Timothy, assistant professor of electrical engineering and biological engineering at MIT} said.]

Hope for humanity
As reported by Channel 5 WCVB, Boston, a group of kids, fifth graders no less, did the right thing by getting together to show support ant protect another kid, Danny Keefe, perceived as different. Young Danny speaks with a speech impediment.
Nevertheless, his parents feel thankful for that because doctors had told them Danny would have severe developmental disabilities, physical and mental, after developing bleeding on the brain soon after birth. Young Danny defied expectations by growing up with only a slight speech impediment. That leaves him able to form words in his mind but unable to control the muscles to fully prononce them.
That speech impediment and an affinity for wearing a coat and tie to school set him apart from his peers at Mitchell elementary, and so they teased and bullied him.
When a football teamamate found out about the abuse of Danny, his water coach, he organized a support day where the football team all wore a suit and tie to school, just like their friend.
The report quotes several of his friends one of whom, Nicholas Lambert, 10, said: “We’re all human and all the same. We’re all created equal."
With the team gathered together Danny's Mom, Jennifer Connoly, lauded the effirts of the tram and said, "“Look at what happened from one person. You all have this in you. You can pay it forward. If you ever have the opportunity to stick up for someone or be their friend, you should do that,” she said.
