"Italian Monastery Seeks Savation in Beer

Praise the Lord and pass the beer!

They seem to have edged closer to my church, Lutheran.

[After the Oct. 30 quake, one of the few things left standing at the monastery was a small brewery, where for the past four years the monks have been making Nursia, a beer named for Norcia’s ancient Latin appellation.

Their brew may now be the salvation — symbolically, at least — not only of the monks’ sanctuary, but also of Norcia itself. This ancient walled city is a ghost town of ravaged churches and cracked palazzi, and is still struggling to recover from the strongest earthquake to strike Italy in 36 years.]

Praise the Lord and pass the beer!

Saved!

World Beer Day: Yay!

Finally, a holiday to call my own, near and dear to my heart: beer, that most ancient of drinks, brewed soon after societies began cultivating grains.  [Beer is one of the world's oldest prepared beverages, possibly dating back to the early Neolithic or 9500 BC, when cereal was first farmed,[3] and is recorded in the written history of ancient Iraq and ancient Egypt.[4] Archaeologists speculate that beer was instrumental in the formation of civilizations.[5]]  (Footnotes hypertext in original)

[HISTORY
On April 7, 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt took the first step toward ending Prohibition and signed a law that allowed people to brew and sell beer, in the United States, as long as it remained below 4.0% alcohol by volume (ABV).  Beer drinkers celebrated and were happy to be able to purchase beer again for the first time in thirteen years.
Our research found this day was created as National Beer Day by Justin Smith, a Richmond, Virginia Craft Beer Examiner, and his friend Mike Connolly from Liverpool, England.   April 7th was chosen because the Cullen-Harrison Act was signed into law and became effective on this day.]

My Newest Hero

For those never hospitalized, it takes some doine to do beer bongs in one.  First, you either have to have necessaries in backpack or have friends willing to bring 'em.  With no friends, I'm really screwed.

Hey, if anyone knows where I downloaded this from or who this guy is, please let me know.  My guess is he plays wing for All Black Rugby team of New Zealand.

"Cicerone:" The Death of Modern Language and Culture

An advert on my Gmail page asked me if I knew beer and offered to teach me to become a cicerone.  You think you knew beer after 50 years of drinking the stuff, especially on a low budget and decisions that necessitates: whether to buy a quart of Colt 45 or a 4 pack of Natural Ice tallboys after an evening telemarketing shift.

As a dedicated beer drinker and hellraiser, however, one also does gain an appreciation for some of the finer crafted malted beverages: a crisp Foster's, a Newcastle, and God's gift, a Guinness Stout.

For some people, however, just drinking a coldy ain't good enough.  No-O-ooo, nefarious scoundrels must turn it into something such as a wine tasting, taking that most democratic of alcoholic beverages and turning it into something akin to wine snobbery, using a few catchphrases, "it has a charming bouquet with floral notes and an oak finish," essentially as a marketing ploy.

What beer goes with what foods, you ask.

Guinness goes with EV-er-y-thing makes a good rule to start with.

Sheesh, check out the darn mission statement:
The Cicerone Certification Program certifies and educ ates beer professionals in order to elevate the beer experience for consumers.
Thanks for complicating the only simple part of my, altering the words formerly set in stone of the late Justin Wilson, the beer you should drink is the beer you like.

To attain the master cicerone status, you must have 2 years in beer service endeavours or substitute 3 references from beer purveyors and--oh yeah-pay $695 to take their certification test.  Nearly $700 to "learn" to drink and serve beer.

Preposterous, I say.  Another triumph of marketing overr common sense I do proclaim.  A quick glance at their list showed 7 certified Master Cicerones in the whole USA, one with a designation of Consultant a la Biere after his name; it makes me laugh, scoffing at the whole notion., casting ridicule and aspersions in that general direction.

$695 to learn to sling beers,  Ludicrous!

Sheesh, I need a beer, dammit!

Beer Good for the Body.....and Soul

[Reduces Risk of Cancer

Just putting your meat in a marinade of beer can eliminate almost 70 percent of carcinogens from the meat, a Portuguese study found. That might not transfer to drinking the beer, but who doesn’t love a good beer marinade? If you do just drink it, though, it does contain loads of helpful antioxidants that can keep you healthy.

Increases Brain Health

Researchers think that a few beers a day can also stave off Alzheimer’s and can reduce your risk of stroke. In 2005, a study was done of 11,000 older women, and those who had one beer a day had better mental function than those who didn’t. In fact, they decreased their risk of mental decline by as much as 20 percent. The Harvard School of Public Health also did a study that showed that a few beers a day might reduce the risk of stroke by thinning the blood and preventing blood clots from traveling to the brain.]

Huzzah, Brewers Fight Fracking

Finally, someone stands up for rights of beer drinkers and having clean water to drink, although why you'd drink water escapes me.

[US brewers have now taken up their case against fracking, worried that any potential contamination of ground water supplies would ruin their business. The process of brewing beer requires clean water, with many breweries being built at the sites they are specifically for the mineral composition of the water.

Simon Thorpe, the CEO of the Ommegang Brewery explained to NBC that “it’s all about the quality of the water. The technology surrounding fracking is still not fully developed. Accidents are happening. Places are getting polluted.” His brewery was built in Cooperstown, NY, due to the ready access to fresh water, but “if that water supply is threatened by pollution, it makes it very difficult for us to produce world-class beer here.”...

Purification equipment at the Ommegang Brewery can filter sediment from the water, and alter the pH levels, but it cannot remove some of the chemicals that could potentially enter the water table via fracking, such as benzene, methane, and possibly diesel. If any such chemicals do enter the water supply then the brewery will have to import its water from elsewhere, or close the brewery completely.

Beer, not Just for Breakfast!

[The university teamed with a Seattle pharmaceutical firm to, once and for all, resolve the structure of the acids that are created by hops, which are used as a bittering agent in beer. Such compounds, they say, play a role in reports that moderate beer drinking can have positive health effects — on diabetes, forms of cancer, inflammation, even weight loss (explain that to some of my old college classmates).]

Release the President's Beer Recipe!

White House Beer Recipe released if we get enough petition requests.

Actually as devout German Lutheran, do however consider beer recipes with honey an abomination before the Lord. Will drink 'em as do not hew to strict dietary laws. Heck, if following Old Test, would have to give up BBQ pork and oysters and that ain't happening.

Never Trust a Man Who Doesn't Drink Beer

That means Mormons, right?  Guys like Willard Mitt Romney who never had the moments of introspection praying to the porcelain god brings, who grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth and upgraded it to platinum

[Son, never trust a man who doesn’t drink because he’s probably a self-righteous sort, a man who thinks he knows right from wrong all the time. Some of them are good men, but in the name of goodness, they cause most of the suffering in the world. They’re the judges, the meddlers. And, son, never trust a man who drinks but refuses to get drunk. They’re usually afraid of something deep down inside, either that they’re a coward or a fool or mean and violent. You can’t trust a man who’s afraid of himself. But sometimes, son, you can trust a man who occasionally kneels before a toilet. The chances are that he is learning something about humility and his natural human foolishness, about how to survive himself. It’s damned hard for a man to take himself too seriously when he’s heaving his guts into a dirty toilet bowl.
~James Arthur Crumley (October 12, 1939 – September 17, 2008)]http://www.sexcigarsbooze.com/2011/09/never-trust-a-man-who-doesn%E2%80%99t-drink/

Better to trust a man who brews his own beer and will have to share the recipe after a Freedom of Information Act Request: Barack H. Obama.

[Obama is a big enough fan of his White House beer (and beer in general) that he's now carrying it on the campaign bus andoccasionally handing out bottles of it. While it may in fact be a great brew, we don't really know for sure since most of us have never tried it. That's why a Reddit user decided to submit a Freedom Of Information Act request for the White House Honey Ale recipe, or any other White House brews, which include White House Honey Porter and White House Honey Blonde Ale. All three use honey from Michelle Obama's White House garden.

The Fedblog points out that this is not the first formal request for the recipe. A petition was recently filed at the White House website, but it needs 25,000 signatures by September 17 before it gets reviewed. As of this writing, it has 295. Only 24,705 to go! The petition pleads, "In keeping with the brewing traditions of the founding fathers, homebrewers across America call on the Obama administration to release the recipe for the White House home brew so that it may be enjoyed by all."]
